2016 Ministers Conference: Preaching to Disciple Millennials

Are you a youth or young adult minister, leader, volunteer or someone who loves young people?

I have an event you might be interested in attending.

The Pastoral Development Team is hosting the 2016 Ministers Conference January 12-14th, 2016 at Brenthaven Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Brentwood, TN (near Nashville, TN).

The theme for this year is: “Ears to Hear: Preaching to Disciple Millennials”

You might be thinking…I’m not a pastor or ordained minister, why should I go to a preacher’s conference.

Well, I think one thing any youth or young adult leader does typically on a weekly basis is speak to young people. You might lead Sunday School, or Sunday Night Worship or Wednesday Night Bible Study but typically at least once a week you speak to young people.

And I bet the goal of that talk or lesson is to disciple young people into a richer faith in Jesus Christ.

We could all benefit from learning more about how best to communicate to the young people God has entrusted us with.

At this year’s ministers conference the keynote speaker is;

Rev. Dr. Rodger Nishioka

Columbia Theological Seminary

Benton Family Associate Professor of Christian Education, Presbyterian Church USA

While Rodger Nishioka teaches in the area of Christian education and practical theology, he specializes in ministry with youth and young adults. Prior to his joining the faculty at Columbia, Rodger served for 12 years as denominational staff in youth & young adult ministry for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Rodger received his undergraduate degree from Seattle Pacific University, his master’s degree in theological studies from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, a Doctor of Divinity degree from Austin College and his Ph.D. from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He has published several articles, chapters, and books largely focused on ministry with youth and young adults and the educational ministry of the church as spiritual formation.

Dr. Nishioka will preach for one of the worship services and share three lectures:

  1. Who Are Millennials?
  2. How Do We Preach with Millennials?
  3. Resilience: Survival Skills for the 21st Century

In addition, there will be pre-conference workshops, sermon writing workshop and service opportunities.

It would also be a great chance for us who minister to young people to connect.
